Can social media replace jounalism in this new era?

Social media has become a great source of information with sites where people can talk to each other directly and indirectly.

I can't help but wonder how important are journalists in this new era of social media and whether or not we really need them to be the source of information.
Nkosana Dube mentioned some valid arguments on whether or not social media is replacing journalism on http://goo.gl/XDWpKj
What do you think, are journalists still needed or can we manage without them?

  2. Yes we still need journalists for a number of reasons. Firstly we need journalists who are on the ground to research stories and events and verifying the credibility of the stories that they cover. Journalists are still useful because there is a need to interview people on a one on one basis. Journalists are still important because there is a need to uncover stories that are hidden. In conclusion, I will say they are important.

    1. I do agree with you, journalists are there to give credibility to the information we receive but do you think that to some extent if certain social media sites were to be considered as a credible source of Information that there would no longer be need for jounalists

    2. We are in great need of journalist in our era and I don't think that a time will ever come where we will be completely independent from journalist. The only role that social media plays is that it helps pass on news faster that the conventional way. Social media helps pass on the news more faster and more efficient anywhere anytime.

  3. Well then Journalists I believe are still relevant its the landscape of how they get the news that's changing. The newspapers are dying so Journalist can still be around if they integrate with social media look at Barry Bateman and other journalists.

    1. True, the only way to keep journalism alive is to integrated with social media, in the sense that journalist should use social media more than print media.

  4. I personally believe that Journalists are still needed because we need them in giving us credibility of news and information, especially the most influential journalists I know such as Barry Bateman and Debora Patta..Social media will always be there but we need journalists in giving us more factual information

  5. Journalists are definitely needed because although anyone can break news to the world, journalists are able to give even more credible and well written news that people can relate and trust.

    1. I understand what you mean, journalists are still important to make us believe and draw the line between newsworthy information and simple stories

  6. Social Media is taking over Journalism, Social media has made it easier for individuals to get a hold of news, latest trends and so much more at just a click of a button.

    1. Do you think that social media should just be restricted as a platform where people can receive and inform themselves on the latest news instead of a platform where ordinary people can create news?

  7. Honestly I think that we still need journalist. Reason, being is that sometimes the things we read on social media is inaccurate so we need journalist to help us still make sense of the news. With that being said though, journalist need to find a way of combining social media and traditional media as one!

Where do we draw the line: what is considered as "history", how much of it are we trying to keep?

This topic got me thinking, when discussions around the days of colonisation (apartheid in South Africa) and transforming to be stronger and better nations. Where do we draw the line between good histor, that we want to keep? I personally get touched when people speak on renaming ancient monuments or any other infrastructural unit, because they promote the "apartheid" or "racist and colonial" times.  Do we consider the first sailer that arrived in our countries as bad history? Then what is good history, a native that became the first president, even if in his time he made more wrongs, (that tarnished his country's name) then rights? This arises the question of, how much of the colonial time history do we want to keep, as constructive information that will ensure the new generation not to forget their roots  and origins. Feel free to let me know what you think about these issues. ..

The need to be search engine optimized/optimizabled

We all want to find a well paying job, drive a nice car, live in a beautiful house, but as young adults we do not realise how important it is for us to build ourselves now instead of waiting to graduate or get a real permanent job. While I was at work, busy with a research task assigned to me, I realised how important it is to have enough concrete professional information about yourself on the Internet. It's hard enough to find a job in this century,  but when all you have showing up in the searchresults when your name is typed is your Facebook account, how easy do you think it would be for your potential employers to be interested in you?

Importance of knowledge

So I’m doing my internship at the University of Johannesburg’s department of Strategic Communications, for the first time in probably my life, I realized how though the business world is. Kevin Welman MD at FleishmanHillard South Africa came to speak to my 3rd year Public Relations class and he highlighted things that made me think about my future. I realized that acquiring knowledge and experience is very important. He made an example of a young adult that came for a job interview, the candidate was able to run a database of FleishmanHillard and areas where they could grow etc. To think that such an intellectual graduate is our competition in the world place is kinda scary. This means that just having a qualification will not guarantee me a job, I need more than that. I might only be 21 but I feel like I’m falling behind regarding skills, knowledge and experience… From now on I will dedicate my time to being an all rounder and learn as much as I can…
